Tales From Beyond
A Darkened Sky
The Lift
'Multiple authors contribute amazing tales with a Twilight Zone vibe. Start with the Pilots at the ground floor and work your way up. Join Victoria as she leads visitors into the building and guides them to make a choice.' - From victoriaslift.com
It took me far too long to discover 'The Lift' and honestly, you don't realise just how much is missing from your life till you hear it.
The acting and sound quality are great in this creepy little series that has so much to recommend it. Although 'The Lift' is in many ways an anthology series – each story is self contained – they are all set within 'The Building' and in each case the story centres around a characters encounter with 'Victoria' and the choices the characters must make.
If you aren't already afraid of lifts (or 'Elevators' if you prefer the American term) then you soon will be after listening to a few stories from this excellent series.
The premise of 'The Lift' is simple, but effective. A mysterious building that can appear anywhere and which seems to call to certain people – people who have a dark secret. Inside they find a lift and in the lift... a little blond English girl.
Doesn't sound frightening to you? Well, you haven't met Victoria yet, when you do, you'll understand. The little girl, Victoria, is at once the most charming and the most chilling person you can imagine. You, like many of he characters that come into her building, will find you swing between finding her adorable and finding her terrifying. Once you are within her sphere you are given a choice, and what happens next is entirely upon your own head.
In effect The Lift is a series of morality tales. The bad are punished, the good are sent about there merry way.
Naturally, since the series uses different writers on different episodes, some episodes will appeal to you more or less than others but all are good and the team have done a great job of maintaining the continuity of the central characters (I am including the building itself as a character here, because in many senses it is just that).
Although Victoria seems some times benevolent and other times less so you still feel very strongly t her personality is complex and that although you do not entirely understand her, you are convinced that she is guided by an internal consistency of character.
There are one or two episodes I find mildly uncomfortable listening but on the whole I absolutely love this series and think that you will like it too.
Don' just take it form me though, listen to a few episodes and hear for yourself.
Oh and if you ever find yourself alone in a lift with a little blonde English girl in a purple dress that seems out of time – whatever you do, be polite.
