Tales From Beyond
A Darkened Sky
The Heavenfield
The Heavenfield is a dark Sci-Fi mystery with elements of espionage, theology and extra-dimensional travel. Unlike many of the entries on 'Tales From Beyond A Darkened Sky', 'The Heavenfield' is an audio book rather than a full cast audio drama, but what an audio book it is. Read by the author himself the multi-part series with individual episodes approximately 25 to 30 minutes long and continuing on from the previous episode.
The sound quality is very clear and very good but I should repeat this is an audio book and not a full cast audio drama so don't expect background music and sound effects, you won't get them.
The story deals with a British scientific experimental station which has discovered an alternative dimension they initially call 'The Heavenfield'. As well as the adventures in the eponymous Heavenfield the story also deals with the fall out of the discovery and the fact that we quickly learn the British scientists are not the only people to have discovered this dimension – and some one wants to keep it a secret at any cost.
With strong language and adult themes from the outset, The Heavenfield is a fascinating and entertaining tale. Warped reality and alternative dimensions rank among my favourite topics for fiction. I have always found them interesting topics and love stories of this nature. The Heavenfield is a very good example of this sort of weird reality/alternate dimension Sci-fi and in addition to the audio drama can also be purchased as a book or ebook.
The author's use of the website as a hub and a way of generating both interest and income (The audio book can be listened to for free but if you are anything like me you will quickly find yourself buying merchandise or treating yourself to the various special features available on the site) is masterful. More authors and audio-drama producers could learn an awful lot from I G Hulme.
If you like dark SF this is an absolute must. It will be of special interest to fans of the work of the author himself (I G Hulme) as well as authors such as Glynn James and fans of games such as Halflife and FEAR.
